Sam Maguire visits!

On Thursday the 26th of January 2012, three of the victorious Dublin Gaelic Football players brought the Sam Maguire cup to St. Aengus Church. Pupils from four schools in the area attended. The Dublin football players: Eamonn Fennell, Michael Darragh MacAuley and our very own local Denis Bastick were welcomed by Fr. Ben. We learned lots of songs to sing when they arrived, including: Sam Is Coming Home and Molly Malone. We look forward to welcoming the cup back again next year!

Protest re planned cuts to DEIS schools Budget 2012

Many thanks to all who came to the protest at the Dáil on the 11th January 2012, to highlight to the politicians in our country that we disagree with the cuts they planned to make to the teaching staff of our DEIS school. Our children deserve to get a good education and for this to happen they need to remain in small class groups.

Successive governments have recognised this and made provision for it. The problem of low scores in literacy and numeracy has not been cured - some children still have difficulties with reading, writing and numeracy. They need a bit more help. This is precisely why DEIS schools have the added resources they do.

The Minister of Education has asked his department to produce a report on the impact these cuts will have on schools in areas such as Tallaght within 4 weeks. It is hoped that the cuts to Scoil Aonghusa Junior and Senior schools and other schools in the area will be reversed, as has been suggested. However, in order to ensure this happens we need everyone to keep up the pressure on all the politicians in the area.

Please contact, by all and any means available - spoken word, letters, email, text etc. - all public representatives, and encourage your families and friends to do likewise. This is a countrywide problem. It will affect this generation of children and those of future generations if these cuts go through.

Primary school is the foundation of Education.

The next protest will be on January 19th. It will start at 3.30pm at the Department of Education in Marlborough Street; from there we will march on to the Dáil.

Transport will be arranged from the school. Children can be brought as their presence will have a greater impact than adults alone. The more people that come, the greater the impact on our elected representatives.
People Power works! This is a job for the whole community.
