5th & 6th Class in the Echo...

Three in a Row for Scoil Aonghusa Chess Champs!

The Scoil Aonghusa chess team won the Tallaght Schools League on June 2nd 2010 when they defeated a gallant St Maelruan's team in a very tense and competitive final thus making it three wins in a row in this tournament.

This completes a remarkable achievement by this group of players. Four of the team, Iliyas, Andrea and Eric from 6th class and Hassan from 4th, were also involved in the 2009 victory. Indeed Andrea has achieved legendary status in the history of chess in the school - and probably in the area - by being involved in all three victorious teams since 2008!

There were some outstanding individual performances this year, notably by Iliyas, playing mostly on board number one, who dropped only a half of a point over the course of seven matches, while Eric, displaying nerves of steel, won all seven of his games.

Mikey from 6th class and Danny, Kim, Dale and Peter from 5th all forced their way into the school team this year and played a very important part in the 2010 success.

Overall it was a great team effort. Even players who did not make it onto the school team played their part. Players reach a good standard only by taking part in in-school competition. So, everybody who took part in the various tournaments or made challenges on the ladder in the chess club can feel that they helped to make the success of the school team possible. So, well done to all.
